The Preliminary SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is offered once per year and is normally taken during junior year (sophomores are encouraged to take the test as well). This test prepares students for the SAT and if they score high enough qualifies them for National Merit Scholarships.
The ACT is a college entrance test that focuses on high school curriculum. It is divided into four sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. The Writing section of the test is optional. This test is normally taken during the second semester of junior year or the first semester of senior year.
The SAT evaluates student knowledge in mathematics skills, verbal skills, and writing skills. This test is normally taken during the second semester of junior year or the first semester of senior year. The SAT Reasoning Test is the college entrance test and some schools will require students to take one or more SAT Subject tests.
