School Safety Officer Grant

The Sierra Vista Unified School District (SVUSD) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant to fund off-duty police officers as School Safety Officers (SSOs) across all district schools. This initiative strengthens SVUSD’s commitment to ensuring student safety, which remains a top priority.

Through this grant, each school will have one officer on campus every day. The SSO shifts are available to law enforcement officers who are licensed Arizona State peace officers, including Sierra Vista Police Officers and Cochise County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Participating officers must complete an online training course through the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) and sign up for shifts via a third-party off-duty management company. Currently, approximately two-thirds of the available positions have been filled, and more officers are expected to join soon.

SSOs will play a vital role in campus security by fostering positive relationships with students, ensuring a safe learning environment, and providing law-related education. Beyond these responsibilities, they will be integrated into SVUSD’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Olweus Anti-Bullying teams. Additionally, they will serve on the District Emergency Response Team (DERT), helping to refine emergency protocols, coordinate crisis responses, and ensure preparedness for safety threats across all schools. Their on-the-ground perspective will be invaluable in shaping school safety strategies while also supporting substance abuse education, anti-violence campaigns, and mental health initiatives.

SVUSD is excited about the opportunities this grant provides and is grateful for the continued support in enhancing student and staff safety. This initiative ensures a stronger and more secure environment for all.
