All schools will be closed on Friday, April 21st and Monday, April 24th for a Spring Holiday. We will see everyone back in the classroom on Tuesday the 25th. Have a safe weekend.
There is currently a shelter in place at Carmichael while a medical helicopter lands on campus for a student who fell and was injured during recess. Once the helicopter has left and EMS are complete the Shelter in Place will be lifted.
In October, 2022 we began our Carmichael Garden Project. We spent several weeks preparing the area. The first step was to pull out hundreds of old roots and weeds from the garden plots. Next we added manure and garden soil. Students were asked to raise their hands if they liked cold weather more than hot weather, then we learned that flowers also have their favorite temperature. We learned that Snap dragons and Pansy’s both grow well in the winter in Arizona. We planted our first flower on October 25th! Students have been watering the flower garden and watching the plants grow and flowers bloom. We now have a beautiful flower bed.
Our next project was to discover what vegetables like cold weather better than warm. After preparing the soil we planted Spinach, Red lettuce, Broccoli and Cauliflower. Students in 4th grade enjoyed tasting the spinach and I even heard things like, “Wow – this is actually good!” “I can’t believe how sweet this tastes!” And even, “May I have more lettuce and spinach?!”
As of Spring break our Broccoli and Cauliflower are growing well! We can see the heads of each and will continue watering and weeding the beds. Now that spring has finally arrived we will be talking about the vegetables that like warm weather better than cold and getting those seeds and plants in the ground!
We are so thankful for the Inspiration Grant we were given by the Education Foundation of Sierra Vista. Because of this grant we were able to purchase Garden Gloves, watering cans, plants, garden soil and many other things to get our garden going.
